For college students, there are typically two tiers of scholarships: need-based and merit-based. The good news is, that even if you’re not a straight-A student, you can still get one of these merit-based scholarships. In order to be eligible for a Gilman Scholarship, applicants must be U.S. citizens who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education (college or university.

  • A citizen or national of the United States.
  • An undergraduate student in good standup at an accredited institute of higher education in the United States.
  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.
  • In the process of applying to, or being accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement.

MISSION OF THE GILMAN PROGRAM

The Gilman Scholarship Program is designed to provide funding for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

The program is funded by grants from USAID, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and other organizations committed to promoting educational opportunities abroad as well as enhancing understanding between international citizens and Americans. Eligible applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during their award year (2021-2022) and have not previously received an award through Gilman.

Students must be studying abroad on a full-time basis during their award year (not including summer). Applicants may not have completed more than one academic year of postsecondary education before their participation in an overseas program begins. Applicants must be from the U.S.
