Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program at Stanford University 2023-2024

Stanford’s Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program fosters a diverse, multidisciplinary community of emerging leaders from around the world who collaborate, innovate, and communicate as they prepare to address society’s complex challenges.

Through the King’s Global Leadership Program, Scholars will expand their knowledge, develop their skills, and strengthen their character through community experiences, workshops, meetings with leaders, national and global study tours, and personal development opportunities.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program includes all seven Stanford schools. Knight-Hennessy Fellows are talented individuals comprised of a multidisciplinary community of scholars. The program provides a platform for purposeful leadership development, enabling you to have a profound positive impact on the world.

Full-time master’s and doctoral degrees in any discipline offered by Stanford University (such as but not limited to DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or Ph.D.), with some exceptions:

  • Honors Collaborative Program applicants
  • MA applicants
  • Juris Doctor (JSD) applicants
  • Stanford students applying for dual graduate degrees
  • A current Stanford graduate student adding a master’s or master’s degree to their current major
    A number of scholarships:

Applicants from all countries – there are no restrictions on nationality, age, the field of study, career aspirations, etc.

Scholarship Worth/Content/Duration:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program receives funding for up to three years of any degree or graduation from Stanford. During the first three years of postgraduate study, Knight Hennessy Scholars gain:

  • Apply directly for a stipend to cover tuition fees and related costs
  • Allowance for living and academic expenses (such as room and board, books, academic materials, teaching materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses)
  • Travel stipend for one economy class airfare to and from Stanford per year.

Additional funding in certain years:

  • Newly registered scientists will receive a one-time relocation allowance designed to offset some of the costs associated with relocating to the region and/or acquiring technology
  • Second and third-year fellows may apply for additional funding to support academic enrichment activities (e.g. conference travel).


There are two basic entry requirements.

First, in addition to applying for Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS), you must apply for, be admitted to, and enroll in any full-time graduate program at Stanford, including but not limited to DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD-, MFA, MPP, master’s or doctoral programs. You must meet at least one of the following four criteria:

  • You apply separately but simultaneously to full-time graduate programs at KHS and Stanford, so you both start in the same year.

  • You have been accepted into a full-time graduate program at Stanford and have been deferred, and will apply to KHS so that you can begin your studies in the same year.

  • You are currently a graduate student at Stanford and wish to apply for admission to a second full-time graduate program at Stanford, so you will start KHS and your new course in the same year.
  • You are currently a first-year Stanford graduate student and will apply to KHS so that you can start KHS in your second year of enrollment.

Second, you must have earned a U.S. bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university on or after January 2017. To apply for admission to the 2024 cohort, you must have completed your bachelor’s degree on or after January 2017.

Application instructions For the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must apply separately to both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and the Stanford Graduate Program. The deadline for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is October 11, 2023, at 1:00 pm PT.

Application deadlines for graduate programs at Stanford vary by program. You will want to check the website of your chosen degree program to see if the application deadline for your degree program is generally earlier.
