The US and Canada largely share their education systems, which are very different from India. Bachelor’s Degrees are generally four years with a few universities also offering 3-year degrees. At the master’s level, one can expect to study for two years for a degree.
However, some institutions will also offer one-year master’s programs, especially in Management and Business related subjects. At the doctoral level, PhDs can take 4 or more years to complete.
The US also has three intakes. September, January, and May. Out of these, September is the primary intake when all universities and colleges will offer all programs.
The options in January become a little less and in May the least. Most applicants choose September however January is also very popular with Indian students.
Universities and Colleges

Universities and colleges can be private or public. Private universities are generally expensive and public universities are more affordable. Also, every state in the US has its own state university system with a number of universities scattered across the state.

Applications and Documentation

To apply at the UG level, you will usually be required to have documents such as your Mark sheets, English language test scores, SAT or ACT scores if required, Letters of Recommendation, Statement of Purpose, CV, Passport Copy, or extracurricular certificates.
Some universities may also ask for specific essays or portfolios for specific programs. Universities also ask for proof of funds to assess your ability to support your Education in the country. Apart from this, many colleges and universities will have an application fee as well which may range between 50 to 100 dollars or higher depending on the institution.
For the PG applications, you will need all your education documents, English language test scores such as IELTS or TOEFL, letters of reference, Statement of purpose, CV, passport, work experience documents if you have, extracurricular certificates, and proof of funds.
Apart from that, some universities may also ask for GRE GMAT scores, portfolios, and specific essays. At the PG level, too, many institutions will charge a request fee ranging between 50 to 200 dollars varying as per the organization.
Tuition Fee, Living Costs, and Scholarships
Private universities are usually expensive and the public university is cheaper. On average, a bachelor’s may range between 20 to 40000 dollars per year.
15 to 30 lac and Masters will be 20 to 45000 per year or 15 to 33 lac rupees. Talking about the living costs, it averages around 18000 dollars per year or 13 lac rupees.
This figure can go up and down depending on your lifestyle and spending habits.
Besides this, student health insurance is also required which will set you back 15 to 2500 dollars per annum which will be around 1.10 to 1.80 lac rupees.
Coming to scholarships, many universities may offer scholarships and financial aid to students.
but early applications are advised as they are very competitive.
Student Visa Application
For the student visa, you will need your passport, acceptance at your school, payment of SEVIS Fee, receipt of DS-160 plus your photograph. Extra documents may be demanded to evidence your suitability for the F1 student pass, including academic transcriptions, licenses, grades, or certificates. Test scores may also be invited, as well as proof of your intent to depart the U.S.
After your package is complete and proof of your economic solidity. 160 dollars is the visa processing fee, 350 dollars is the SEVIS fee, and the I-20 fee will vary as per the university. but it is generally a few hundred dollars. An interview is also required.
Part-time Jobs and Work Visas
Working part-time while studying overseas may benefit you by paying for a few further expenditures. In the US, first-year students can only work on-campus for 20 hours a week and 40 during vacations. To work off-campus, a student must receive permission from a recognized school authority called the Designated School or the DSO.
On average, part-time wages range between 11 to 15 dollars per hour. Talking about post-study work visas you can stay back in the USA for 1 to 3 years under the OPT or Optional Practical Training.

Deadlines for USA Fulbright Guide Scholarship 2023-2024
The deadlines vary as per the institution. Higher-ranked universities close early whereas others may continue offering rolling admissions. Many universities will have deadlines in January for fall intake whilst some may have no set deadlines.
Ideally, 8 to 9 months before intake is the time frame we should look at to start preparing.
